on a recent trip to baltimore, my family and i made a point to dine at la scala, an authentic italian eatery in the inner harbor. upon entering the tiny location, we were greeted by an incredibly welcoming staff- an instant indicator that the meal would not disappoint. we were seated directly above the restaurant’s indoor bocce court in an intimate corner that appropriately accommodated our large party.
the meal began with a selection of small plates, including fried calamari- probably one of the best i have ever had- as well as an incredible bruschetta and cuori di carciofi, artichokes topped with capers, crab meat and lemon. the appetizers were prepared simply, showcasing the delicious ingredients perfectly.
launching into the second course, i selected the chicken raffaello, which consisted of tender chicken accompanied by artichokes, mozzarella, prosciutto and mushrooms. my entree was absolutely delicious, as were the other dishes that my family chose.
to finalize an evening of delectable cuisine, i opted for affogato, one of my all-time favorite desserts. i was presented with velvety chocolate gelato swimming in piping hot espresso and the contrast of both flavors and temperatures made for a delicious dessert experience.
pouring espresso clearly isn’t my forte
overall, our experience at la scala was nothing short of fantastic. each dish was crafted to perfection, the staff was both charismatic and knowledgeable and the restaurant’s ambiance was ideal. i would highly recommend making a stop at la scala if you find yourself in the baltimore area any time soon for both a delicious meal and a game of bocce!
