bowled over

when it comes to breakfast, i try to opt for healthier choices to start my day off on the right foot. for that reason, i am a major fan of açaí bowls and love not only the nutrient-packed ingredients, but also how insanely delicious they are. some of my favorite juice bars and organic restaurants that serve açaí are just a few minutes from my school’s campus, but when i’m home i prefer to make my own to not only save money, but also to experiment with whatever fruit, juices and granola are in my kitchen that day. here’s my favorite recipe for a refreshing, healthy, homemade açaí bowl!

the main components of the smoothie-like base for this bowl are frozen, unsweetened açaí puree, frozen berries (i love blueberries, raspberries and blackberries), half of a banana, a tiny bit of agave syrup for sweetness and almond milk as needed to thin out the mixture. creating the bowl is literally as simple as combining all of your ingredients in a blender and blending until your bowl base is smooth and possesses the dark purple color that açaí is known for.

after the base is done, the options are virtually endless when it comes to topping it off. some of my favorites include fresh berries, sliced banana, granola and chia seeds. i absolutely love the combination of açaí and granola and one of my favorites is trader joes’ vanilla almond “just the clusters” granola cereal, but any granola you like would be perfect atop the bowl. here’s my final product and, might i add, it was absolutely delicious!
